Balafon Quartet - Tradition Reimagined
A contemporary interpretation of traditional Mande music, performed by a quartet of four balafonists:
Griot Abou Sylla from Guinea,
Irene Koloseus,
Andy Algire
Niko Diarra-Koloseus.
We aim to create a modern twist on these traditional sounds while preserving the rich cultural history of the balafon. The music features both original compositions and reimagined traditional pieces, including an African-inspired interpretation of Bach’s Prelude in C.
About the Balafon project
The balafon, a traditional wooden xylophone dating back to the 12th century, is central to Mande culture in West Africa. Crafted from wood and gourds, it serves not only as a musical instrument but also as a symbol of history, storytelling, and spirituality in ceremonies and celebrations.

This initiative presents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Mande music. The goal is to contribute to the cultural vibrancy and enrichment of the Brooklyn community by creating an inclusive environment for enjoyment and connection through music.
